To Read or Not To Read

So I've been reading a lot lately. I always seem to read three or four books at a time. There is a primary one, but I can't tell if I have some kind of attention disorder or if I am in different moods - I think the latter. Either way, I read to relax, but also to stir up new ideas. Thus, at the moment I have quite a bit on my mind.

The current crew of material is:

  • Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong by: James Lowen
  • Blueprint for Disaster: The Unraveling of Chicago Public Housing by: Bradford Hunt
I recently finished up:
  • Jayber Crow by: Wendell Berry
  • Introducing Liberation Theology by: Boff / Boff
  • Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama by: Tim Wise
  • White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son by: Tim Wise
Looking back two things come to mind: One, this seems like heavy reading. Two, the material is difficult to take in because it speaks of the racism, discrimination, death of community and horrors of technology all around me...decidedly not relaxing. Maybe I should consider less taxing material? I am not sure reading fluff would interest me though. Hmm. What to do? Thoughts? Book suggestions?

  1. Hey I read the lies my teacher told me. since i was a teacher and all. and was surprised that for the most part, I hadn't been told those lies--and I certainly wasn't teaching them! There is hope.
